The Limousines of Oradour |

These are two of a series of images I took when I came to the town of Oradour France in 87. They are among the other limousines and houses that are crumbling into the ground since the day the town was made into a national memorial. The backstory is that the Germans were retreating and the war was almost over. In their retreat they thought they would 'payback' for some resistance activity that cost a few soldiers their lives. ... so they killed everyone in the town, every man woman and child except for five who escaped, an infant among them. The country has preserved the town as it was, with plaques on each place where the villagers were terminated. All that is left now are these rusting moments of a grander time silently being pulled back to the earth, full of the memories of what they have witnessed. |
